Everything to Know About Getting a Rhinoplasty by NewBeauty | Dr Jay Calvert

May 7th 2019 Everything to Know About Getting a Rhinoplasty by NewBeauty | Yahoo Lifestyle

Dr Jay Calvert MD on What to expect: Irregular Nostrils “Selfie nation has caused people to really look more carefully at their nostrils, so we’re doing a lot more nostril modifications these days,” says Beverly Hills, CA plastic surgeon Dr Jay Calvert, MD. Surgeons can do any number of things to create a complementary set, “from moving the septum and adding cartilage to the rim of the nostrils, to moving the alar base and tucking up the mucosal lining of the nostrils,” says Dr. Calvert. Some of these tweaks can even be done in the office under local anesthesia.

Deemed one of the most challenging procedures in plastic surgery—one where “millimeters and symmetry really matter,” notes Philadelphia facial plastic surgeon Jason Bloom, MD— rhinoplasty (the “nose job”) can reduce or enhance the size of the nose, smooth away humps and bumps, tweak the shape and orientation of the tip, raise or lower the bridge, and relieve breathing problems. “Our aim is not just to make the smallest nose we can,” Dr. Bloom adds, “but to balance the tip and nostril size with nasal function and support”—objectives often achieved by using grafts (made of the body’s own cartilage and fascia) to change the framework of the nose. Done right, the high-impact procedure can bring overall balance to the face, and in many cases, make patients look younger. By “enhancing the supporting structures and making the link between the tip and other parts of the nose stronger, we assure that the nose won’t be as susceptible to dramatic gravity forces and the droopiness that occurs to every nose with age,” says Cleveland plastic surgeon Bahman Guyuron, MD.

Along with a slew of technical upgrades, an evolved aesthetic has helped make the surgery a 21st-century staple. “The goal of any rhinoplasty is a natural, un-operated look—never the scooped-out slope with pointy, turned-up tip,” says Dallas plastic surgeon Rod Rohrich, MD. Meeting expectations starts at consultation, when you and your surgeon will map out your new nose—typically with the help of 3-D imaging, which lets you glimpse every angle, and tweak accordingly—and discuss the surgical maneuvers that may be required to create it, or at least come close (as doctors can’t guarantee your final result will be an exact replica of the computer-generated image).

Two Approaches to Rhinoplasty: Open
“While closed rhinoplasty is the classic approach to the nose, open rhinoplasty rose to popularity in the early ’80s, and became the more common method for teaching residents in training, as the operating surgeon was able to point out the anatomy with the nasal skin elevated,” explains Los Angeles plastic surgeon Geoffrey Keyes, MD.

Closed
The closed, or endonasal, approach is sometimes dubbed “scarless rhinoplasty” because incisions are hidden inside the nose. Despite the name, Dr. Bloom says, “We can still see everything we need to. We’re taking the still-attached cartilages out of the nose through the nostrils, suturing them, modifying them, and putting them back.”

Key Questions to Ask During Your Consultation

Are You Board-Certified?
Your doctor should be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) or the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS).

How Many Rhinoplasties Do You Perform Weekly?
While there is a select lot of rhinoplasty specialists who operate on multiple noses daily, Dr. Rohrich says a true expert should do three to five rhinoplasties a week, and have at least 10 years of experience.

May I See Before-and-After Images of My Specific Problem?
“At the end of the consult, when we’re looking at before-and-afters, most of my patients will say, ‘Her nose looks like mine!’ during our review. And that’s my goal: to show patients I can address their particular issues,’ notes Dr. Bloom. Ask to see 10 or more relatable B&A photos. And beware of cookie-cutter results: “Older techniques called for removal or interruption of too much cartilage, which resulted in prototype noses—everyone had the same nose,” says Dr. Guyuron.

What Approach Would You Use for My Nose, and Why?
When it comes to open or closed, one method isn’t superior, but ideally, your surgeon will be proficient in both, so he or she “can match the approach with the complexity of your case,” says Dr. Bloom. “You want the surgeon to be comfortable with the approach they choose, not adapt their style to fit your requests.

March 18th 2019 Researchers Launching CBD Study with Former Hockey Players. Investigators are looking for a link between the cannabinoid and alleviation of concussion-related health conditions.

The NHL Alumni Association is one of the sponsors of a study that will examine the effects of CBD on around 100 former pro hockey players who suffer from brain trauma caused by the league’s notoriously rough play. “It’s really rather sad when you see these giants of sport having to deal with terrible headaches and emotional issues as well—there’s quite a bit of anxiety and depression and PTSD in athletes that has gone unrecognized,” neurosurgeon Charles Tator told a morning television program on Monday. The announcement of the study is a victory for the former NHL players who have fought for adequate treatment for the damage that professional hockey does to its athletes. Detroit Red Wings standout Darren McCarty and VEDA Sport director Marvin Degon are among the players past and present that have been outspoken about the urgency of connecting pro athletes to safe and effective cannabis treatment for chronic pain. In fact, professional hockey is leading the charge when it comes to athletes having access to marijuana. Currently, 28 of the NHL’s 31 teams is located in an area where players are able to consume cannabis with minimal risk of penalty. The league in general tends to separate their approach to players’ drug use between performance-enhancing drugs and “drugs of abuse”. The latter category of substances is dealt with on an often confidential, case-by-case basis geared towards helping players to deal with addiction issues. There is no publicly available list of the league’s banned “drugs of abuse”. This approach is in stark contrast to the MLB, NBA, and NFL, which take a much more punitive view of many substance. Their players are still banned from use of cannabis completely, despite the fact that 82 percent of major league teams (including the NHL) are located in regions where cannabis is recreationally or medicinally authorized. This zero tolerance policy has raised concern among those who recognize the heavy physical punishment visited on professional players’ bodies in a typical work day. But the chorus of voices for medicinal marijuana in pro sports is growing. The volume was turned up last year with former NBA Commissioner David Stern told an interviewer that he thought cannabis should be removed from the league’s list of banned substances. “I think there is universal agreement that marijuana for medical purposes should be completely legal,” Stern said. The study for former NHL-ers is due to start this summer and will entail giving many participants CBD pills for a period of one year, the investigation being sponsored by the NHL Alumni Association, Canopy Growth, and Neeka Health. Should the study reveal positive linkage between the treatment and alleviation of symptoms, Canopy Growth has committed to funding further research. The line of study is crucial for former athletes who need an alternative for pain treatment to highly addictive opioids typically prescribed for such health conditions. Concussion-related conditions have been found to lead to depression, PTSD, and dementia. “We see a lot of athletes who have chronic pain and have other problems related to repetitive brain trauma,” said Tator. “We are reasonably optimistic that cannabis and especially the CBD part of cannabis can relieve a lot of that suffering.” https://hightimes.com/news/researchers-launching-cbd-study-former-hockey-players/

March 2019 NIP 'N PUCK Former porn star legend Mia Khalifa says getting hit by puck in boob ‘saved my life’ following surgery by Dr Jay Calvert. Sports presenter is recovering with her boyfriend Robert Sandberg in Los Angeles following four-hour 'fat grafting' surgery to fix damaged implant. Beverly Hills-based Dr Jay Calvert, a plastic surgeon expert, performed the procedure, which involved transferring fat from one part of Mia's body to her breast. He explained the "deflated boob" was partly caused due to the position of her implant, which was about seven or eight years old. Mia, 26, said: "Getting hit by the hockey puck damaged my breast but saved my life!" When ruptured, saline and silicone from breast implants can leak into the body and cause serious infection.

Having Mia Khalifa as a Guest on the Dr. Hockey Podcast: A Capital Idea. Dr. Jay Calvert here, but you can call me Dr. Hockey. That’s because bedsides being a renowned Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, I am also the host of the Official PodcastOne weekly hockey podcast, Dr. Hockey. The folks at Money Inc. took a listen and decided to put me on their first line, so I am over the boards and onto the ice to bring you a quick summary of each week’s dynamic Dr. Hockey Podcast, so the puckheads of the free world economy earn a quick commission in the greatest game on ice.

In the recent past, I have had Vegas Golden Knights’ owner, Joe Maloof, player agent extrordinaire, Pat Brisson, and legendary voice of the NHL, Doc Emrick on the Dr. Hockey podcast as excellent guests, but this week may have topped them all as we welcomed Social Media Sensation and host of the “SportsBall”  podcast on YouTube, Ms. Mia Khalifia.

Mia arrived wearing an authentic international Swedish hockey jersey, not only is Mia a TREMENDOUS NHL fan, she recently was struck by a puck while attending last season’s game 4 of the NHL Eastern Conference Final( the incident would require a plastic surgeon’s care and that’s where I came in). Mia was there to root for her Washington Capitals ( FYI: to say Mia is a HUGE Caps fan is a vast understatement).

In was in this game 4 vs. the Tampa Bay Lightning when symmetry struck. Or an errant slap shot did, right into Mia. She said that the impact of the frozen vulcanized rubber was so strong as the errant slapper hit her, that she thought she had been shot!

Dr. Jay Calvert & Kris Calvert Named Honorees for Concern Foundation’s 44th Annual Block Party Celebrating “Cancer Crusaders”

Concern Foundation (www.concernfoundation.org) for cancer research will host its 44th Annual Block Party on the back lot of Paramount Pictures Studios in Hollywood on Saturday July 14th 2018. The annual event will feature multiple stages of live entertainment, casino style games, live and silent auctions, and food, desserts and beverages from over 70 of Los Angeles’ best restaurants and caterers.

This year marks Concern’s 50th year and since inception, the organization has awarded over $60 million in salary support to over 750 cancer researchers.  While cancer is still one of the leading causes of death in the world, major strides have been made and there are more people surviving their cancer than ever before thanks to such valuable research.

The annual block party brings together for one evening each summer, vendors, restaurants, individual donors and sponsors from Los Angeles, Beverly Hills and surrounding neighborhoods. The anticipated 4,000 supporters will be filling the streets of the iconic New York back lot at Paramount Pictures Studios, and this year will celebrate “50 Years of Super Heroes: Researchers, Donors and Volunteers.”

This year’s event hopes to reach an additional milestone by exceeding the 2018 goal to raise $2 million to financially support research focused on immunology-based methods to treating cancer, exceeding last year’s total of $1.7 million.

In addition to hosting the various vendors and sponsors, Concern Foundation each year honors members of the community who have provided a significant change towards the fight against cancer. This year, the foundation will honor Dr. Jay and Kris Calvert and their family as “Cancer Crusaders” for their participation in helping to conquer cancer through research.

Dr. Jay Calvert has been named one of Los Angeles Magazine’s “Super Doctors” consecutively in 2014, 2015, and 2016.  He has appeared on multiple hit television programs including CBS’ “The Doctors” and OWN’s “Dr. Phil.” Alongside his wife Kris, Dr. Calvert has openly shared the couple’s personal experience with cancer, having had prostate cancer affect the lives of both of their fathers. The Calvert’s 10-year-old son Ace was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) at age four and while he has beaten his cancer today, ALL can always return and thus, he is never truly cured.  This is the main reason he and his family feel so strongly about raising money to help find a permanent cure.

It’s truly an honor for Concern Foundation to recognize the Calvert family as this year’s Cancer Crusader honorees for their commitment to helping provide salary support for cancer researchers and for sharing their personal story,” comments Derek Alpert, president, Concern Foundation.
For 50 years, Concern Foundation has pioneered the advancement of cancer immunology, the study of the relationship between the immune system and cancer, a field that is now widely acknowledged to hold the most potential for discovering treatments and prevention for cancer.

With 90-95% of net proceeds going directly to research, Concern Foundation has made significant strides toward bridging a major gap in research funding by focusing its grants on young, innovative researchers with breakthrough ideas.
